Frequently Asked Questions

Laser Hair Removal

What is the advantage of using a laser?

Lasers are precise instruments that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will specifically disable the hair follicle. Unlike precision "hair-by-hair" treatments like electrolysis, the laser uses a wide beam that treats many hairs at once. Because of this, large areas like a man's full back, full legs or arms can be completely hair free within a few hours. You will see immediate results that will last far longer than shaving, tweezing, waxing, chemical depilation, or other temporary treatments.

Is it safe?

Laser hair removal was pioneered after more than 30 years of laser research by physicians, and has been shown through extensive clinical trials at more than 10 laser U.S. and Canadian laser research centers to provide safe and effective hair removal. The laser parameters were carefully defined by studying the anatomy of the hair follicle and precisely matching the laser light and pulse duration to the follicle size, depth, and location to safely and effectively remove the hair.

How long will it take?

Because the laser treats many hairs at a time, facial areas (chin, lip, cheeks, etc.) can be treated in 20 - 30 minutes. Small body areas (underarms, bikini line, etc.) take less than a half hour. Larger body areas (full back, full legs, both arms, etc.) usually take an hour or more, depending upon the size of the area and the density of the hair.

Does it hurt?

Most laser clients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable, but not painful. For sensitive facial and body areas, however, some people do ask for an aesthetic. If you decide you would prefer an aesthetic, We can prescribe a topical aesthetic one for you.

What happens to the skin after the treatment?

Within several minutes of the treatment, the treated area will be come slightly red and puffy. This reaction subsides, and within a few hours the area returns to normal. Since the laser does not burn or cut the skin in any way, you can return to your normal activities immediately.

How many treatments will I need?

The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter their growth cycles at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.

How does the LightSheer™ Diode Laser System work?

The system emits near-infrared laser light that is absorbed by the pigment located in the hair follicle. The laser is pulsed, or turned on, for only a fraction of a second. The duration of each pulse is just long enough to damage the follicle, while the system's unique, patented contact-cooling handpiece, the ChillTip™, helps protect the skin by conductive cooling during the laser energy delivery.

What advantages does the LightSheer have over other laser hair removal systems?

The LightSheer Diode Laser System was designed from the ground up for laser hair removal, so it has the wavelength, fluence, pulse width, and active epidermal cooling system - the ChillTip™ ideally suited for laser hair removal. The system is small, compact, and (in some models) portable, so it fits well into virtually every type of existing practice. The system's solid state construction makes it durable; it's state-of-the-art user interface makes it easy to use. Finally, Lumenis™ has been in the business of making medical and cosmetic lasers for more than 30 years to develop unparalleled service and support-from our extensive training and practice building resources to our 24-hour replacement service. No other hair removal system offers the same combination of product excellence customer service and support.

Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I've been using for years?

The LightSheer Diode Laser System's design provides enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?

The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI) as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer.

SoftLight® Laser System

Three commonly asked questions.

Is SoftLight painful?

The SoftLight process is gentle, non-invasive and requires no anesthetic. If you are like most individuals who experience SoftLight, you will feel nothing more than a slight warmth or tingling sensation.

Is SoftLight permanent?

Hair is natural to your body and our goal is not to kill the follicle, but to disable it. SoftLight Hair Removal impairs the growth of your hair over time, so that is regrows both slower, finer and less visible. With the current SoftLight technology, it will be necessary to come in for treatments several times a year.

Is SoftLight safe?

Yes. The SoftLight Hair Removal procedure has already been performed on thousands of people with positive results. The same YAG laser has been used by physicians for over 10 years without any long term adverse effects.

With SoftLight, a low- energy laser targets a carbon-based solution to more effectively deliver its energy directly to the roots of the hair follicle. (See Illustration to right.)

Electrolysis

Facts About Hair Growth?

Hair begins to grow in an area with a major follicle producing a coarse hair, surrounded by finer follicles that may or may not be producing hair currently. It will often seem, after some electrolysis treatment, that the treated hair is regrowing somewhat finer.

The hair that seems to appear as regrowth often is new adjacent hair now beginning to grow. This is the reason it takes time to accomplish permanent removal of all the hair, the ones that are visibly growing and also those that have the potential to grow. When a hair is treated properly by electrolysis, it is removed PERMANENTLY and can never return.

It is very important to note that a series of REGULAR treatments will accomplish the best results.

Does It Hurt?

Electrolysis is NOT considered to be a painful procedure. However, people have different levels of sensitivity and something that is completely comfortable for one person may be less comfortable for another person, Most people undergoing treatment for the first time often say, "If I knew that's all there was to it, I'd have been here a lot sooner." Please realize, however, that tissue is being treated and that a sensation is to be expected.

Is It Permanent?

Electrolysis has been proven to permanently remove unwanted hair . Its permanency has been recognized by the medical profession with hundreds of articles having been written and published in the medical literature archives.

How Long Will It Take To Remove All My Excess Hair?

Many different factors determine the length of time necessary to completely remove all your unwanted hair.

» The type of hair you have (straight, wavy, curly) and what temporary methods of hair removal you have previously employed.

» The kind of skin you have: normal, fine or super-sensitive

» The location of the hair (some areas must be treated more slowly than others)

» The quantity of hair to be removed.

» The cause of your hair growth.

» Frequency of treatments is included because the more regularly you have treatments, the quicker you will be rid of your superfluous hair.
